Advocacy and Systems Navigation
Navigating systems can be complicated, especially when services and supports are not designed to meet the needs of individuals and families living with FASD. We work alongside individuals and families to help them understand their options, access resources, and navigate the systems they encounter.
Our support may include connecting individuals with community resources, assisting with applications and referrals, communicating with service providers, advocating for individual needs, and supporting people through transitions between services.
We also work to address the broader barriers that individuals and families experience by advocating for greater understanding of FASD, challenging stigma, and promoting more inclusive and responsive systems.
Systems Navigation
Our Navigation Program provides as-needed support from an FASD-informed worker to help individuals and families navigate systems, services, and situations that may be difficult to manage on their own.
Support may include:
Assistance completing forms, applications, and other paperwork
Applying for appropriate supports and services
Connecting individuals and families with community resources
Navigating health, social, housing, education, and other systems
Court support and assistance navigating legal processes
Helping individuals communicate with service providers and professionals
Supporting individuals and families when they experience barriers to accessing services
We support individuals with FASD to recognize their strengths, understand their needs, and advocate for themselves. This may include helping individuals communicate their needs to others, explain FASD and how it affects them, identify helpful supports and accommodations, and feel more confident advocating for themselves in different settings.
Our goal is to empower individuals to have their voices heard and to participate in decisions about their own lives.
Parent and Caregiver Advocacy
Through our Family Coach Program, we support parents and caregivers in advocating for the needs of their children. This may include supporting families in communicating with schools, doctors, and other professionals; applying for services and supports; understanding available resources; and following up to ensure their child receives the help they need.
We work alongside parents and caregivers to help them feel confident advocating for their child and ensuring that their child's strengths, needs, and experiences are understood and recognized.
